Sharp, stabbing, and localized pain in front of the ears

Approach to TMJ Dysfunction

Examination

We analyze the type of bite, identify missing teeth, check for impactions, and assess the condition of wisdom teeth. We measure the maximum painless mouth opening, any lateral displacement of the jaw, and deviation from the midline. Through palpation, we assess for clicking and popping sounds, pain, and the condition of the chewing muscles.

Supplementary Tests

Depending on each case, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon treating you will prescribe one or more of the following tests:
· Orthopantomogram
· Computed Tomography (CT)
· Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Diagnosis of Pathology

The diagnosis of TMJ pathology can be classified into one of the following groups:
· Myofascial syndrome
· Displacement of the articular meniscus
· Osteoarthritis and osteoarthrosis
· Cysts and tumors in the TMJ
· Congenital or developmental joint anomalies

Treatment

The treatment for TMJ depends on the diagnosis. It can range from prescribing a splint for bruxism, specific physiotherapy for TMJ, botulinum toxin injections, to surgery.
