The extraction of wisdom teeth or molars is one of the most commonly performed treatments by our dental surgeons.
If your wisdom tooth is causing problems with your oral health, it is essential to remove it safely. Before the extraction, we conduct a thorough examination to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
At our dental clinic in Torrevieja, we have advanced technology for both diagnosis and surgical procedures. Our oral and maxillofacial surgery team will perform a panoramic X-ray (orthopantomography) and a dental CT scan, allowing us to plan a safe and predictable treatment.
When a patient comes to our clinic with complaints of pain in their wisdom teeth, we follow this sequence of assessment, diagnosis, treatment plan, treatment, and follow-up:
The assessment includes a visual inspection of the entire patient’s mouth and a panoramic X-ray (orthopantomography), which helps us accurately determine the cause of the patient’s symptoms. In some cases, a dental CT scan may be necessary to obtain a three-dimensional image of the wisdom tooth's position in relation to the bone, gums, and facial nerves.
Based on the assessment, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon will establish the diagnosis and the treatment to be followed. It may be that the problem does not originate from the wisdom tooth, and no extraction is needed.
The treatment can range from prescribing pain relievers if the surgeon believes it is a temporary issue to extracting the wisdom tooth.
The surgical extraction treatment is usually performed under local anesthesia. If 3 or 4 wisdom teeth need to be removed, it is most comfortable for the patient to undergo the extraction with conscious sedation in the dental chair. In some cases, it may be considered to perform the extraction in the operating room under general anesthesia.
After the extraction, antibiotics and pain relievers are usually prescribed for the first 7-14 days. A week or two after the surgery, a follow-up appointment is made to ensure that everything has gone well.
