What are Subperiosteal Implants?

Subperiosteal implants are an advanced solution for patients who have lost bone mass in the jaw or maxilla and cannot receive conventional dental implants. Unlike traditional implants, which are placed directly into the bone, subperiosteal implants are custom-made for the patient and are situated on top of the maxillary or mandibular bone, beneath the periosteum (the tissue layer that covers the bone). This type of implant is an ideal alternative for patients who do not wish to undergo or are not candidates for bone grafts. The fixation of these implants is not based on osteointegration with the bone, which accelerates the rehabilitation process, allowing fixed dentures to be placed on the same day as the surgery.

Who are Subperiosteal Implants Indicated For?

Subperiosteal implants are particularly recommended for patients with severe bone loss and for whom bone regeneration, through grafts or advanced techniques such as sinus lifts, is not feasible or desired. These implants are an excellent option for those seeking a quick and effective solution to restore the functionality and aesthetics of their mouth without undergoing more invasive or time-consuming treatments.

Advantages of Subperiosteal Implants Compared to Conventional Implants

One of the main advantages of subperiosteal implants is that they do not require bone regeneration, eliminating the need for grafts and additional procedures.

Faster procedure since no bone grafts are needed, and there is no waiting for the osteointegration process.

The technique is less invasive than other procedures for treating severe bone atrophy, such as sinus lifts or zygomatic implants, reducing recovery time and postoperative discomfort.

An effective solution in complex cases. For patients with significant bone loss, it is one of the few options that offer stability and functionality without the need for prolonged interventions.

Phases of Treatment with Subperiosteal Implants

Treatment with subperiosteal implants usually consists of several phases:

1

Evaluation and Diagnosis

At our clinic, we conduct a detailed examination using 3D imaging to determine the amount of available bone and plan the exact position of the implant.

2

Planning

A digital image is obtained through CT scans of the patient’s bone structure to manufacture a custom implant that fits perfectly in the jaw or maxilla.

3

Placement of the Implant

During a simple surgical procedure, the subperiosteal implant is placed under the periosteum. This surgery can be performed under sedation or general anesthesia in the operating room. During the same procedure, it is possible to place a temporary fixed prosthesis. Therefore, the patient can leave the surgery with fixed teeth the same day.

4

Placement of the Prosthesis

Once the implant is in place and the healing phase is completed, the permanent dental prostheses are placed, restoring both functionality and aesthetics.
