Why Does Sleep Apnea Occur?

During a single night, sleep apnea can occur multiple times and can last from a few seconds to even minutes. It is considered mild sleep apnea when it occurs between 5 and 15 apneas per hour, moderate apnea between 15 and 30 apneas per hour, and severe apnea more than 30 apneas per hour.
The risks associated with sleep apnea relate to the likelihood of developing high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, stroke, or type II diabetes. Additionally, a person suffering from sleep apnea typically snores and does not rest well, which can lead to impaired attention, behavior, and memory.

Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

The mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a dual splint for the lower and upper jaw that moves the lower jaw forward a few millimeters and prevents airway blockage. It is used for mild to moderate sleep apnea.

CPAP Device

The CPAP device (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) exerts a constant positive pressure in the airways to keep them open and prevent blockage. It is used for moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Orthognathic Surgery

Through orthognathic surgery, a forward repositioning of the lower jaw is performed to increase airflow through the upper airways. Orthognathic surgery is very effective in resolving sleep apnea in patients suffering from retrognathism or class II lower jaw.
